Montreal’s India Canada Organization (ICO) is inviting all Montrealers to come and enjoy the festivities which include colourful floats, exotic music and beautifully costumed dancers – all part of India’s Independence Day celebrations. The parade will start at the corner of Jean Talon and Querbes at 3.30 pm and ends at Howard Park, corner of Liege and Querbes.
South Asians from Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto will be in attendance representing the vast diverse dysphoria from Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh as well as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. Add in their “cousins” from the West Indies and you know…this is going to be a great party!
The parade was launched in 2003 by The Honourable Paul Martin and has grown in size and fame with each passing year. (Prime Minister Stephen Harper participated in the parade back when he was Leader of the Opposition) Joining Montrealers in this years celebrations will be: The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, MP for Calgary East and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Justin Trudeau, MP for Papineau and official Opposition critic for Multiculturalism and Youth; and Parc Extension City Counselor Mary Deros who is also the Executive Committee Member in Charge of Multiculturalism.
This year’s fête will include an ICO Awards presentation to recognize various individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the community. Refreshments will also be offered at stands at the corners of St. Roch and Querbes, as well as Querbes and Jarry.
ICO President and Founder Daljit Singh is thrilled at the increasing popularity of this annual event because it serves two purposes – it unites and supports the South Asian community and shares this rich and fascinating culture with their Montreal and Quebec “neighbors” . Says Singh “The parade is a perfect way for our many diverse groups to come together in a show of blended harmony and also lets us make new friends in our adopted home – which makes for one big, happy family!”
